![]() | Friday, 5 October, 2001, 10:35 GMT 11:35 UK Baseball's greatest season? ![]() Baseball's memorable season continues, with Barry Bonds breaking the single-season home run record and Rickey Henderson breaking Ty Cobb's career run mark. Could it be Major League's greatest ever season? Barry Bonds breaks Mark McGwire's single-season record after hitting his 71st and 72nd home runs of the year. Meanwhile, Rickey Henderson of the San Diego Padres homered for his 2246th career run, surpassing the legendary Ty Cobb's 73-year-old record. Other landmarks include Bonds breaking Babe Ruth's single-season record for walks and Yankees' Roger Clemens becoming only the second man in Major League history to begin the season with 19 wins in his first 20 decisions. In addition, Seattle Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki has set a rookie record with 234 hits so far in the season. With records falling thick and fast, could this be baseball's finest ever season? Send us your thoughts. Although individual accomplishments are wonderful, baseball is still a team sport. It's a shame that most news is focused on individual accomplishments, and not the greatest team in baseball history, the Seattle Mariners! We may be thousands of miles away, but the electric nature of this season has been felt here in the UK. Baseball fans have been up all night watching these games! Pick any one of three AL teams to win the World Series: the Yankees, the on fire Oakland A's, or my team, the record breaking Mariners. This was a terrific season and hopefully there will be a new labour agreement soon, so that we don't have to hear millionaires bicker about making more money, and stop these ridiculous spiralling salaries as dictated by a handful of agents.
Baseball is an amazingly resilient game. For all the controversies surrounding player salaries, tweakings with the basic rules which have enabled long-standing records to be broken with ease, and the apparent weakening of the quality of pitching, it remains highly entertaining. For all the spectacle of Mr. Bond's accomplishments, and hitting more than 70 home runs in a single season is an accomplishment, it should be remembered that it all comes to naught: his team, the Giants, failed to reach the Playoffs. Baseball is a team game of complex strategy as well as individual competence. The special case of Barry Bonds bears this out well. Just to say what a great season the Mariners are having. They have just equalled the Chicago Cubs' 1906 record of 116 wins, with one game remaining to play on Sunday. Well done the Seattle Mariners. Although I am American I often peruse the British news sites to get a different perspective. Your article on Barry Bonds and his unpopularity piqued me. You cannot compare Bonds and his demeanor to that of Roger Maris. The comment that "nice guys finish last" was particularly inapt It is true that Maris was not a fan favourite, and that the fans preferred Mickey Mantle. But that is a statement about Mantle's unique charisma and not about Maris. Maris was a shy and humble man, not prepared for the media spotlight, not even that of 1961 which was tame by today's standards. He was, however, a nice guy. BoyCat
Congratulations to Barry Bonds from baseball fans in the UK. Also, well done Rickey Henderson and the Mariners for their record breaking seasons. All this, and the post-season still to come! Barry Bonds is having a dream season for San Francisco. Congrats to him for becoming the new season Home Run king of baseball, and thank you BBC for giving our UK friends coverage of our sports. Sending much love from across the pond! Let's not overlook an even more impressive record that is within range. The Seattle Mariners just set are one game away from tying the records for the most wins in a season--this is a record that was set in 1906. Living in Seattle, I could not agree with you more. We have had a fantasy come true season. We are having a heck of a good time. Baseball is truly the world's greatest game. The breaking of these records show that today's players are the equals of the legends of the game such as Roger Maris, Ty Cobb, and Babe Ruth. Hopefully this season will finally bring back the fans lost during the players' strike and restore baseball to its place as the national pastime in the USA -- to say nothing of Japan, Korea, and much of Latin America. |
