Somerset have claimed victory in the C+G Final with a 41-run victory over Leicestershire at Lord's.

After posting a first innings total of 272, Somerset always looked to have the upper hand, with man of the match Keith Parsons hitting 60-not out.

Shihid Afridi bowled well for Leicestershire, taking three quick wickets, but couldn't repeat his heroics with the bat.

Somerset never allowed Leicestershire to settle at the crease, and can now celebrate their first trophy in 18 years.

What did you make of the match? Whose performance impressed you most? E-mail your verdict on the C&G Trophy final.

At last! Well done to Jamie Cox and the lads
Polly, Devon

I have supported Somerset CCC for twenty six years and the amazing team performance and espirit de corps shown by all eleven players on Saturday made me proud to be a Somerset supporter. Well done lads!
Keith Johnson, England

At last! Well done to Jamie Cox and the lads. A very effective team in the making and we expect more successes over the coming years. Credit must go to Kevin Shine, Jamie Cox and the Somerset board who have signed up some very useful players who had potential and are now realising it. Although the amazing days of Botham, Richards, Garner, Moseley, Marks etc are unlikely to be eclipsed, this is a very worthy and talented team.
Polly, Devon

With over 40 runs conceded as extras, and Afridi the destroyer playing agricultural shots from the first delivery he received, is it any wonder Somerset managed to win? Surely a more methodical approach would have seen them cruise to victory?
Ayyaz, Surrey, UK

I was there back in 1983 when we beat Kent to win the Nat West Cup - our last trophy until Saturday. Being Taunton born and bred, I can honestly say that Saturday was for me the best sporting day since, well, 1983! The boys should all be knighted!
Sheldon Cole, England

How wonderful to see local Taunton boy Keith Parsons winning his first man of the match award at Lord's
Don Manley, UK
As a Somerset boy living away I am delighted by this performance. The Somerset team have been immense this season, and I would like to particularly compliment Jamie Cox - Somerset have had some fine captains in the 25 years I've been following them but I think he's the best of the lot. Well done, and keep up the fine work!
D Fear, Shropshire

I was there and it was wonderful - even better than that nail-biting semi-final at Taunton against Warwickshire! As a Devon boy in the 1950s, I suffered (with my father) as Somerset finished 17th when Surrey came top. Now in my fifties, with children grown up, I am able occasionally to watch a very different Somerset. Naturally I am delighted by Caddick and Trescothick, but what has impressed me most is the success of the 'ordinary' cricketers who have proved that a successful whole is more than a sum of its parts. How wonderful to see local Taunton boy Keith Parsons winning his first man of the match award at Lord's. I whole-heartedly agree with Vic Marks in his Observer article today that there is still room for county cricket. So 'drink up thee cider', Zummerzet, and let's zee 'ee again in London in 2002!
Don Manley, UK

Well done boys, they really deserved the win for all their hard work this season. Come on the zider lads!
Joe , England

Well done Somerset - a super day out. Many thanks. Beat Leics in every department, most noticeably a real team effort. The supporters (where were the Foxes fans?) did the county proud too. Roll on the next visit to HQ.
Dave, Bristol, UK

Next year the County Championship?
Nick Clarke, Co Kildare, Ireland
Credit to Somerset for playing well. I bet Vince Wells is ruing his decision to not play the in-form and experienced Devon Malcolm instead of Scott Boswell. Lords was bouncy, wasn't going to swing much (Boswell's main asset is his ability to swing the ball) plus has its interesting sloped wicket. Boswell was only playing because of his 4-44 in the semi, but Wells should have learnt from Somerset Captain Jamie Cox's example - Mark Lathwell scored a century in the first round, but for the right tactical reasons Cox left him out rather than let his emotions leave him feeling guilty if he didn't play. I was at Lord's and it was a shame that I couldn't shut up all those Cider Boy fans with a Leicester victory, but never mind lads - we'll be back!
Alex Willmott, Hastings UK

Delighted to see Somerset win a Trophy again. All credit to Jamie Cox and the boys. Next year the County Championship?
Nick Clarke, Co Kildare, Ireland

Marvellous result! This was a true team performance. Yes, our Test stars were back at last, but to see the contributions of the generally unheralded Parsons, Turner, Jones etc made me glow with joy. I still remember as a kid the delight I experienced when CRM stood beside Colin Cowdrey in the '67 Gillette Cup final, and how much effort Fred, Bill Alley, the Palmer boys etc put into the game. It was not to be that day, but how proud we were.

Then the agony of that dreadful September in '78 when we just missed two trophies, but the satisfying sight of Rosie at last brandishing silverware the following year was a moment to cherish. Yes, our big names helped us to win four cups in those days, but the difference this time was that it was the relative unknowns who did it! Here's to second place in the Championship, but why oh why must we have to do without Banger and Caddick for the crucial last two games? This central contract system is nonsense.
Cynewulf, UK

This is massive result for Somerset and supporters like me and will hopefully be the springboard for further one day and county championship success. We have a fantastically well rounded team, typified by Parsons' and Turner's resolute knocks and backed up by solid bowling from Johnson, Jones and Dutch. I've waited 10 years for this and I'm still watching the highlights. Drink Up yer Cider!
Rob, Abingdon, UK

About time that a less fashionable county won a major competition
John Roche, Belgium
Somerset were brilliant! The atmosphere at Lords was electric, especially when Afridi was pouched by Rob Turner. Poor Scott Boswell had a nightmare and as a sympathetic Somerset fan, I hope he bounces back. For Somerset, the future is bright and there is no reason why they can't be seen as title contenders for the county championship in 2002, and who knows, maybe Lords again...
John Fuller, England

Excellent news. About time that a less fashionable county won a major competition. Also, both Caddick and Trescos deserve something for their summer efforts, so good luck to the west country side.
John Roche, Belgium

I had a thoroughly enjoyable day and was delighted that Somerset won and that Parsons was man of the Match.
Jean Hollyoak, Cornwall

I'm Somerset through and through, so this is a marvellous result!
Bob, UK

Well done Somerset! We all knew you could do it! The cider's already flowing down here. And to all those people out there who were certain of Leicestershire winning - they sure showed you!
Laura, Somerset, UK
