Franz Burgmeier targets Liechtenstein goal at Hampden

SCOTLAND v LIECHTENSTEIN
Venue: Hampden Park, Glasgow Date: Tuesday, 6 September Kick-off: 2000 BST Coverage: BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Sport website. Highlights on BBC One Scotland at 2235 BST.

Liechtenstein midfielder Franz Burgmeier is hoping to claim a Scottish triple when the principality visit Glasgow on Euro 2012 qualifying duty.

"I scored last year against Falkirk in the Europa League and about eight years ago against Livingston in the Uefa Cup," he told BBC Radio Scotland.

"So I hope to complete the hat-trick on Tuesday night at Hampden Park.

"It will be a difficult game for us. Scotland will pressure us from the beginning, so we have to be ready."

Liechtenstein, who played their first international in 1982, are ranked 141st in the world and are without a win in nearly three years.

And Tuesday's visitors lost 4-0 at home to Spain while Scotland were drawing a blank in Lithuania on Friday night.

However, they have caused a few shocks over the years, famously earning a 2-2 draw with Portugal in October 2004 and holding Slovakia in the same World Cup qualifying campaign.

In the last set of European Championship qualifiers, they beat Latvia and Iceland, while England could only manage two 2-0 wins on the way to Euro 2004.

"We have to make sure we do not conceded an early goal and if the game is going on at 0-0 we will get confidence," added Burgmeier, who played the 2008/09 season with Darlington.

One of eight members of the squad who play for Vaduz in the second tier of Swiss football, he was impressed by World Cup winners Spain, who are red hot favourites to progress from Group I.

"It was a really difficult game," said Burgmeier. "The Spanish team were brilliant, they had about 80% of ball possession, so it was tough for us.

"We conceded two stupid goals from our mistakes and at this level you can't afford those kind of mistakes."

Liechtenstein manager Hans-Peter Zaugg was also full of praise for Spain, who visit Hampden in October.

"Spain were unbelievably strong and it was good for us and the public," he said. "I don't see how a team can play any better than they did.

"My players said, with the way Spain played, they couldn't get near enough to even foul them!

"When we thought we'd won the ball, we lost it again, it seemed we had two or three fewer players than they did."
