Scottish Football Association president George Peat has assumed executive powers while the governing body searches for Gordon Smith's successor.

Gordon Smith resigned on Monday after nearly three years in the role, citing personal problems among other factors.

The decision to put Peat in temporary charge was made at a board meeting at Hampden on Wednesday.

Smith took up the post of chief executive in 2007, having formerly worked as a BBC Scotland sports pundit.

The former Rangers midfielder Smith played for Kilmarnock and Brighton, while he had a spell as assistant manager with St Mirren.

He stepped down after revealing concern over the health of his elderly patients, among other factors.

"It's not purely personal reasons, or the negativity I've experienced...the timing is right," he said.

Speaking on Tuesday, Peat thanked Smith for his efforts, adding: "We understand and appreciate his reasons for leaving."
