The opening ceremony for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi is now just six weeks away, and on Wednesday, the 191 athletes - 108 men and 83 women - selected for Team Scotland were confirmed. They've been set a target of between 18 and 25 medals, which is short of the medal haul of four years ago when a triumphant Scottish team returned home from Melbourne with 29 medals, including 11gold. The team is a rich blend of youth and experience. 72 year old bowler Willie Wood will be competing at his eighth Commonwealth Games - an amazing feat - while diver Grace Reid from Edinburgh is the youngest member of the team at just 14 years of age. She's not short of big competition experience though, having just finished fourth at last week's European Championships in Budapest. Sadly, there are some notable absentees from the Scottish team. Former World bowls champion Alex Marshall won't be there, our best gymnast Daniel Keatings is injured, but perhaps the most significant absentee is Sir Chris Hoy, who was "forced" to withdraw after the UCI announced a new European Championship event in November that carries Olympic qualification points. But, when he announced he wouldn't be riding in Delhi, Hoy also admitted that he would only be 95% fit for the Games if he was to compete. Hoy is in the news this week saying that he doesn't feel the Games will be devalued by the absence of several big names. But try telling that to the millions of sports fans who were hoping to see Usain Bolt - the fastest man in the world - and the likes of Victoria Pendleton, Beth Tweddle and Jessica Ennis all competing. Surely, there will be something missing from Delhi. Chef de Mission for the Scottish team Jon Doig is a guest on Sports Weekly this Saturday morning at five past nine.
