Archie Gemmill beileves McFadden's goal is Scotland's new best ever.

Gemmill beat three players before scoring against Holland in Argentina, but says the mantle of most famous Scotland goal now passes to McFadden.

"It was a moment of magic and better than the one I scored when you consider what was at stake."

"Three points were hanging on that goal which makes it very, very important."

"The goalkeeper Mickael Landreau may look back and think he could have done better, but it was a wonderful strike and that is what football is all about."

Gemmill's winner against the Dutch wasn't enough to prevent Scotland's elimination from the World Cup group stage.

But McFadden's goal has taken Scotland to the top of their Euro 2008 qualifying group, one point ahead of Italy and two points clear of France.

And with three matches left to play, the Scottish Football Hall-of-Famer says the Scots now have a real chance of reaching the finals in Austria and Switzerland.

"It's there for us to take. It was a fabulous performance by every single player in the Scotland team.

"We are in a far better position now than we were before last night. The important thing now is to keep the momentum going," he said.

"Everything is looking rosy for Scotland at the moment."

But although the night in Paris belonged to McLeish and his men, Gemmill was quick to pay tribute to the Scotland manager's predecessor.

"What Walter Smith did shouldn't be forgotten either," he added.

"He started the revolution two years ago and it was because of him we started the campaign so well.

"Alex then continued in the same vein, changed things a little bit and brought a couple of players in."
