Hampden is to host the final of NFL Europe's World Bowl XI in June 2003.

It will be the first time Scotland has hosted the event since 1996 when the final was held at Murrayfield.

On that occasion the Scottish Claymores defeated Frankfurt Galaxy.

NFL Europe's managing director Jim Connelly told the Claymores' official website: "It is very exciting for us to be taking the game back to Scotland.

"The fans there made World Bowl '96 in Edinburgh a memorable event and we expect Hampden Park to be rocking for World Bowl XI.

"For the game itself, we are privileged to be playing in one of the finest stadiums in Europe and proud to be able to add World Bowl to Hampden's great history of sporting occasions."

The Claymores' general manager Steve Livingstone echoed Connelly's thoughts.

'Splash of colour'

"The continued development of the Scottish Claymores will add enormous value to the Scottish community, creating a new and even bigger audience for a fantastic sport," he said.

"I am sure I reflect the thoughts of everyone at the Claymores and all of our fans when I say that we are all incredibly excited about the prospect of the World Bowl coming to Glasgow.

Glasgow City Council has been instrumental in bringing the World Bowl to the city.

Lord Provost Alex Mosson said he was delighted to have succeeded with the bid.

"It boosts still further the image of Glasgow as a major centre of sport, following the decision by Uefa to host the Champions League final at Hampden in May.

"The arrival of World Bowl also cements the excellent relationship we enjoy with the Scottish Claymores and the NFL.

"The Claymores add a splash of colour to our sporting calendar that more and more people, particularly families, are coming to appreciate and support."
