Jones was injured in the Ospreys' Heineken Cup tie against London Irish |
Ex-Wales lock Gareth Llewellyn insists Wales must start with Adam Jones in the Six Nations finale against France. Coach Warren Gatland is concerned about prop Jones' fitness after two months out because of an elbow injury. But Llewellyn is convinced Jones has to start against a strong-scrummaging French pack in Stade de France. "He will feel the pace of the game but what do we want Adam for - to give us 50-60 minutes? Then you could bring the sub on," said Llewellyn. "I'd rather do that if I'm perfectly honest than start with a makeshift tighthead." Jones, 30, was added to the Wales squad on Monday for the final Six Nations match after missing the games against England, Scotland, Italy and Ireland. That was after British & Irish Lions tight-head made his Ospreys comeback in the win over Glasgow on 5 March during which he played 23 minutes as a replacement after being out for seven weeks. Jones comes into the Six Nations squad to replace his Ospreys team-mate Craig Mitchell, who dislocated his shoulder in Saturday's 19-13 win over Ireland. Jones is expected to undergo fitness tests on Tuesday before Gatland names his match 22 to face France at 1300 GMT on Thursday, the second time it has been put back from the original announcement of Tuesday. | The set piece is very good with the French and we certainly need to match them there |
But Llewellyn, who won 92 caps for Wales between 1989 and 2006, believes Wales cannot afford to go to Paris without Jones in the starting line-up. "He is certainly one of the best scrummaging tightheads in the world and we are going in against a French team who are potentially going to have something to prove. "The set piece is very good with the French and we certainly need to match them there. "I think as long as his elbow is right and I'm sure it is now he has had some game time with the Ospreys he won't be a fitness, as a running around problem." *Follow Thursday's Wales team announcement on all BBC Wales outlets from 1300 GMT.
