Jamie Roberts scores for Wales against New Zealand in the summer |
Cardiff Blues and Wales centre Jamie Roberts has jumped the gun over his comeback, according to coach Dai Young. After five months out with a wrist injury, 23-year-old Roberts announced on Twitter on Monday that his return was "imminent". However Young was quick to play down the player's comments ahead of Saturday's Heineken Cup clash at Northampton Saints. "He's probably swallowing his foot at the minute," said Young. Roberts missed the autumn Tests and first set of European rounds following surgery in the summer. His comeback appeared to be ahead of schedule when he posted an update on his Twitter page. "Just had my appointment with the wrist surgeon," Roberts Tweeted. "I walked out feeling like a kid at Christmas. Return to the playing field imminent." But as the Blues prepare for a double-header with Pool One leaders Northampton, Young dispelled any notion of Roberts' involvement on Saturday. "He's retracting his statement, really," said Young. "He's done plenty of skills with us, and when we haven't done any contact, he's done the work. "He's put his foot in it a little bit; he's probably swallowing his foot at the minute." Roberts made his competitive debut for the Blues on the wing against the Ospreys in 2007, and has also featured at full-back. In just two seasons, he has cemented his place in the Wales team and become one of the most exciting centres in world rugby.
