Laura Prosser and Amy Day say they are ready to go head-to-head for the Wales Women's World Cup scrum-half spot.

"It's good to have strength-in-depth, we've got that and know that whichever one of us starts the other can come on and do as good a job," said Prosser.

Day added: "We're good friends and will support each other as much as possible. I've been waiting seven years for this Cup, it's really something special."

The pair have been receiving coaching from ex-Wales scrum-half Paul John.

"There's a healthy competition for the jersey," said the former Pontypridd half-back, now employed as Wales Sevens coach.

"The girls are working hard, they're very keen and competitive against each other."

Prosser added: "It's always good to practice the core skills like passing and there's no-one better than Paul."

Wales open their campaign against Australia at Surrey Sports Park on Friday (1400 BST).

The game will be the second of the tournament, two hours after Canada face Scotland in the opener.

Wales play two other tough pool matches at the same venue in Guildford.

South Africa are next up on Tuesday, 24 August (1200 BST), before Wales face holders and favourites New Zealand on Saturday, 28 August (1400 BST).

The tournament then enters the knock-out phase with the fourth round of matches on Wednesday, 1 September, before finals day on Sunday, 5 September.

"Everyone's beatable on the day," said Prosser.

"It's good to start against Australia and South Africa, if we do well we can set ourselves up for the big one against New Zealand.

"If you want to be the best, you've got to beat the best."

The minor knock-out matches will be played at Surrey Sports Park, while the semi-finals, third-place play-off and final will be staged at the Twickenham Stoop.
