Fitness battle for Dragons and Wales wing Aled Brew

Dragons and Wales wing Aled Brew is in danger of missing the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

The 23-year-old picked up the problem in the 28-20 win over the Ospreys, and it is worse than first believed.

"We are waiting for more info, but it could be long term," Dragons coach Paul Turner told the South Wales Argus.

Brew, who won his three caps in 2007, has been in superb form as the Dragons' leading try scorer this season and could push for a Wales summer spot.

Wales' testing schedule sees them facing South Africa in Cardiff on 5 June before embarking on a two-Test tour of New Zealand.

Blues wing Tom James' role must be in doubt following his walk-out on the Wales squad when 18-year-old Tom Prydie was chosen ahead of him against Italy.

Leigh Halfpenny may not be considered as he requires an operation, with injury almost certain to rule out Mark Jones.

Wales coach Warren Gatland will need to consider whether to rest veteran Shane Williams, who has had an impressive season off the back of last summer's gruelling British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa.

The other leading contenders for wing berths are likely to be Dragons trio Brew, Will Harries and Richard Fussell, plus Prydie's fellow Ospreys young gun Kristian Phillips.

The Dragons will miss Brew as they look to nail down their Heineken Cup qualification for next season and stay in the race for a Magners league play-off spot.

They already have Dan Lydiate and Adam Jones out for the season.

Ashley Smith, Lewis Evans and Joe Bearman could return from injury for the Rodney Parade side in their next match, though, home to Edinburgh on 18 April.

But in-form Wales lock Luke Charteris could be a doubt after aggravating a neck injury in the defeat at Glasgow.
