Ieuan Evans says Dragons should target star names

Wales scrum-half Dwayne Peel

Ex-Wales captain Ieuan Evans believes Newport Gwent Dragons would be right to target players of the calibre of Sale's Dwayne Peel and Eifion Lewis-Roberts.

Peel has seen his Wales stock fall since joining the Guinness Premiership side while coach Warren Gatland has also overlooked Lewis-Roberts.

The Dragons' good form continued with a 30-14 Magners League win over Leinster.

"I think it's time for them to be bullish. They're playing some good quality rugby," Evans told Scrum V.

Dragons boss Paul Turner admits he is interested in the calibre of players such as the Sale duo as he prepares to enter negotiations with the region over his future beyond the end of this season.

606: DEBATE

Peel saw his place in the Wales pecking order drop below now injured Mike Phillips and Gareth Cooper until beating the latter to the number nine jersey for last month's defeat by Australia.

Gatland omitted Lewis-Roberts from his autumn Test squad on fitness grounds, preferring not to field a specialist tight-head prop in the games against New Zealand, Samoa, Argentina and Australia.

Ex-Wales and British and Irish Lions star Evans, a former Heineken Cup winner with Bath, says the Dragons are in the sort of form that could bring them success in their forthcoming double-header against Biarritz.

He said: "They got a bonus point for the fourth try in the first half against Leinster.

"I know Leinster brought an inexperienced side over, but nevertheless they got some good momentum going.

"They weren't that hampered by international call-ups, particularly in key decision-making areas.

I think the Dragons can go down there and really push Biarritz

Ieuan Evans

"They haven't got the deepest of squads there and that's worked in their favour as long as they keep the injuries away.

"But they've got two big games coming up now against Biarritz back to back in the Heineken Cup.

"At this time Biarritz are floundering mid-table in France. I know they beat Gloucester and beat them well, but Gloucester were struggling at the start of the season, lacking in confidence.

"I think the Dragons can go down there and really push Biarritz.

"If the forwards give them a platform and give them that go-ahead ball they need, they are playing some good quality rugby."
