Watkins has not featured for Wales under Warren Gatland

Wales centre Matthew Watkins has joined Newport Gwent Dragons from Gloucester on a two-year contract.

The 30-year-old replaces Rory Sidey, who was released by the region last week to return to his native Australia.

Newport-born Watkins, who has 18 caps, began his career with Newport, joined the Scarlets in 2002, then moved to Gloucester last summer.

"I'm really pleased to be coming back to Rodney Parade, I'm looking forward to coming home," said Watkins.

"Looking at the squad, there are a lot of quality young players coming through with a great deal of potential and I think there is a style of rugby in the backs I'll fit in with.

"It's going to be an exciting season for me. I have learned a lot, particularly at Gloucester.

"I hope I'll be able to bring some of the lessons I have learned and leadership qualities I have developed to the Dragons."

Watkins, who can also play on the wing, played regularly for Wales under former coach Mike Ruddock but has not featured under Warren Gatland, his last cap coming in 2006.

The 6ft, 14st three-quarter played 22 times for the Cherry and Whites last season, but leaves halfway through a two-year contract.

His arrival at Rodney Parade is timely, with Sidey, Gareth Maule and Phil Dollman having left and Marc Stcherbina retired after suffering a serious neck injury.

Ashley Smith and Rhodri Gomer Davies are the other centres on the Newport-based region's books.

"He is a talented, versatile player who will bring a great deal to our side.

"Matthew's experience and leadership will also be a great asset to our team."
