Shane delighted at BBC accolade

Shane Williams was surprised to win the BBC Wakes accolade

Shane Williams says winning the BBC Wales sports personality of the year award 2008 has topped off his 'incredible' year.

The Wales wing took the accolade on Sunday after previously being named 2008 Six Nations and International Rugby Board player of the year.

The Ospreys star said: "It's been crazy over 12 months and a dream come true to be honest.

"It really is getting better and better and this tops it off, really."

However, Williams is already looking forward to 2009 when he hopes to help Wales retain their Six Nations title and join a glut of fellow countrymen on the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa.

He said: "It's a big year coming up, a lot of rugby with the Six Nations and Scotland the first game, but there's a lot of pressure on us to do well next year.

"And I think certainly with the coaching staff and the squad we've got there at the moment we are capable of big things and we all know that within the camp.

"Hopefully [there'll be a big Welsh Lions contingent]. I don't see why not. We've got most of the best rugby players."

Williams says he was surprised to win the award, in which he won the public vote ahead of Olympic gold-medal-winning cyclist Nicole Cooke in second place while boxing champion Joe Calzaghe was third.

"Even I voted for Joe Calzaghe I came here as one of the nominees and I certainly didn't think for one second I was going to win it," said Williams.

"It has been an incredible season and I just don't want it to end so hopefully I can do the same next year."
