Alun Wyn Jones insists Wales have more to give |
Alun Wyn Jones insists Wales still have some room for improvement despite their 21-18 victory over Australia. The win was the only success by a European side over a Tri-Nations country during the autumn. But Jones says Wales will not be resting on their laurels as they prepare to start the defence of their Six Nations Championship title. "We won . . . but we still know there is another 10 or 20 per cent to go," the Wales lock told Scrum V. "And knowing that it is a case of not being stagnant and sitting on our laurels and being satisfied. "Ideally we would have wanted to beat three southern hemisphere sides (South Africa, New Zealand and Australia). What could have happened could have been very special. | 606: DEBATE |
"But it didn't happen and we have got one win. And overall two out of four wins (Wales also beat Canada) with two very good performances (against South Africa and New Zealand), even though they were losses." Jones said it was hard for Wales to lift themselves for the Wallabies after the defeat to the All Blacks. "I think physically it's been a hard four weeks and mentally it's been a hard four weeks, but emotionally against New Zealand we had so much belief we were going to win," he revealed. "Coming off that was very difficult. To change our fortunes around against Australia has been a difficult task. But we had 74,000 fans who have been, pardon the clich, our 16th man. "When Shane (Williams) scored that first try you couldn't hear anything. It was one of the best moments playing for Wales especially getting that win at the end." Jones insisted that Wales are now physically and mentally stronger than when they achieved the Six Nations Grand Slam. "We played professionally and we got the win. I think it was the most ball in play time we have had - 37 minutes. "We are a lot bigger, stronger and more powerful. People's body weights are up, along with confidence, emotional intelligence and game management. "All these things go hand in hand. It's brilliant to be a part of at the moment."
