The WRU has tempted Phil Davies back into the coaching fold |
Former Scarlets and Leeds director of rugby Phil Davies has become the new coach of the Wales Under-20s side. Rob Hoadley, Gareth Baber, Tony Clement and Wayne Proctor assist, Paul John, Mark Taylor, Dale McIntosh and Byron Hayward also getting Union jobs. "I'm thrilled to have been given the chance to get back into top level coaching," said Davies, 44. The move is a dramatic reversal of fortune for Davies, whose contract was terminated by the Scarlets last April. | 606: DEBATE | Wales U20s made the semi-finals of the IRB Junior World Championship in June, but the Welsh Rugby Union advertised its age grade coaching positions last month. Davies has long been admired by the WRU, almost becoming senior national coach instead of Gareth Jenkins two years ago. Now, after the disappointment of his departure from the Scarlets, his coaching career appears back on track. The Scarlets were poor last season, losing every one of their Heineken Cup pool matches, having reached the semi-finals the season before. | THE PHIL DAVIES CV Born: Seven Sisters, 19/10/63 Career: Police officer Clubs: Llanelli (captain for six seasons), Leeds Position: No 8, lock Wales caps (1985-95): 46 1996-2001: Leeds player-coach, takes Tykes from Division Three to Premiership 2003: Leeds make Heineken Cup debut 2005: Leeds win Powergen Cup 2006: Resigns at Leeds after their relegation May 2006: Appointed Llanelli Scarlets director of rugby 2006-7: Leads the Scarlets to the Heineken Cup semi-finals 2007-8: Scarlets lose all six Heineken Cup pool matches, Davies resigns in April September 2008: Davies takes Wales U20 job | The region's board ran out of patience and Davies was relieved of his duties with two weeks of the season to go and a year left on his contract. But Davies' coaching credentials are impressive. In addition to reaching the Heineken Cup semi-finals in his first season at Stradey Park, he took Leeds from Division Three to the Premiership in England and won the Powergen Cup. Baber and Wasps assistant Hoadley will coach alongside Davies at the U20s, Clement working as team manager and Proctor on fitness. John is the new Wales Sevens coach with Hayward on fitness, while McIntosh becomes assistant coach of the Under-18s, Taylor the team manager. Dai Young (U20 and U18), Colin Hillman (Sevens) and Danny Wilson (skills) will work as technical assistants with Alun Davies as a management advisor, all reporting to national performance manager Huw Wiltshire. "Player and coach development is fundamental to the ethos of these sides and it is vital to work achieve a close, working relationship with the regions and Principality Premiership," said Wiltshire.
