The Dragons were competitive but tired in the second half |
The Ospreys and Dragons fell to ignominious defeat in their assault on the Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham. Their attempts to win the 82-year-old charity event ended within the first 90 minutes of its nine hours with first-round losses. The Ospreys never threatened in a 26-5 loss to Sale, while the Dragons were more competitive before an eventual 28-19 defeat to London Irish. Harlequins won the title, beating the British Army 22-12 in the final. Saracens defeated Northampton 26-7 to claim the second-tier Plate competition. The Ospreys lost 33-17 to Leeds in the Plate, while the Dragons fell 29-14 to Northampton. For winners Harlequins, England's David Strettle was making a triumphant Twickenham return six months after suffering his latest Test career setback with injury. "It was a special day for me, and I know it was special for the rest of the boys," he said. "It is not what about talking or training; it is what you do on the pitch - and with England and Quins, that is the way to answer anyone's critics." Strettle, who was overlooked for England's 32-strong elite player squad announced by England manager Martin Johnson last month, delivered six tries throughout the tournament.
