Delve is waiting to hear whether he has won a Wales starting spot

Back-rower Gareth Delve says Wales will avoid a repeat of their first Test capitulation against South Africa in Saturday's second clash in Pretoria.

"We need to step up, make the big hits, slow down their ball and start poaching," said Delve, 25, whose side lost 43-17 in Bloemfontein last week.

"(Wales coach Warren) Gatland said last week that we had an inferiority complex against the southern hemisphere sides.

"We spoke about it and thought we'd addressed it but were proved wrong."

Wales have beaten the Springboks just once in their history, and have never triumphed on South African soil.

Moreover, Wales have not beaten one of the Tri-Nations sides on their home turf since overcoming Australia in 1969, a 1987 win over the Wallabies having been played in New Zealand.

Gloucester's Delve came off the bench in Bloemfontein to win his eighth cap, but is unsure whether he has earnt a starting place in Gatland's team, to be named on Thursday.

"I'm not sure whether I did enough when I came on in the second half," Delve told BBC Sport Wales.

"But I know in my heart what I can do and I have huge faith that - given the chance - I will make my presence felt.

"It's about the contact areas first and foremost, the collisions.

"They got over the gain line far too easily and prospered from that, it was a kick in the teeth and we have to bounce back.

"There were far too many simple mistakes last week, we weren't ourselves. Possession is paramount and we threw too much away."
