Dan Biggar's 12-point haul inspired Wales' under-20s to an opening World Junior Championship win over Italy.

The man of the match outside-half capped a excellent individual display with a late try as the Welsh earned themselves a bonus point victory.

Wales captain Sam Warburton began the 29-10 rout at Swansea's Liberty Stadium before Jonathan Davies, Gareth Owen and Biggar finished off the Pool D success.

Wales play Japan on Tuesday before a pool decider against France on 14 June.

Number eight Warburton galloped 40 yards to open the scoring inside the opening quarter of an hour.

His Blues team-mate Leigh Halfpenny thought he had added a second minutes later but his try was ruled out.

Promising Scarlets centre Davies did score another for Wales before the interval but Italy's winger Andrea Bacchetti dragged the visitors back into contention just after half-time following Simone Favaro's fine break.

But as Italy tired, Wales cut loose in the final 12 minutes as Ospreys centre Gareth Owen was teed-up by Biggar to secure victory.

And it was young Ospreys number ten Biggar, on his home turf, that clinched a potentially vital bonus point victory with a late score.

Biggar, though, admitted afterwards: "Italy were extremely difficult to break down and the final score doesn't reflect the game - it flatters us a little.

"I'm happy with my performance but the bonus point win is the most important thing."

To add insult to injury, the Italians were reduced to 14 men as their try-scorer Bacchetti was sin-binned for the final eight minutes.
