Coach Warren Gatland says Dwayne Peel has a place in the Wales side

Players have been warned that their selection for Wales could be put at risk if in future they choose to play their club rugby in another country.

Llanelli Scarlets announced on Tuesday that Wales scrum-half Peel would join English side Sale Sharks next season.

But Peel is exempt because Gatland says he was aware the 26-year-old was in negotiations before the edict was made.

"I will not penalise any of our current internationals who will not have been aware of the proposed new strategy until last week," said Gatland.

"It would be unfair, as we are aware that Dwayne's negotiations were already well advanced when we made our statement.

"Obviously it's very disappointing from our point of view that he's decided to leave Wales and it's one of the reasons we've tried to encourage players to stay.

"It is, however, important that all young Welsh rugby players know that we want to invest in them with the aim of realising that investment on the field for Wales.

"The structures and systems are being built here in Wales and we know we can nurture and develop the talent fully

"We will do all we can to help the regions flourish."

The Welsh Rugby Union's proposal to encourage players to play their club rugby in Wales will be put before the full WRU board for approval on 24 January.
