Cardiff Blues scored five tries as they collected maximum points from their Magners League visit to Rodney Parade.

Jamie Roberts, Rhys Williams and Tal Selley crossed in an impressive first 40 minutes from the visitors.

Selley grabbed his second try after the break and Mark Lewis added the fifth late on, both converted by the excellent Nick Robinson.

Richard Parks scored the home side's only try, with the other points coming from the boot of Aled Thomas.

The Blues, looking to build on their opening win of the season over the Ospreys, took just eight minutes to breach the Dragons defence.

Robinson's perfectly placed and weighted kick from inside his own 22 was caught cleanly by Xavier Rush and Roberts was on hand to take his pass and sprint to the right corner.

Some premature celebrating by Roberts allowed Dragons full-back Martyn Thomas to make up some ground, but his desperate dive proved in vain.

Robinson, who missed the conversion but then added a penalty, was the architect again some 10 minutes later for the Blues' second try.

The Dragons lost a lineout on their own throw inside their 22, allowing Gary Powell to charge towards the tryline.

The ball was then spun out to Robinson and he brushed off some appalling midfield tackles before releasing Williams, who had a clear run to the line.

Aled Thomas cut the gap to 3-13 with his first penalty, but the Dragons defence was cut to pieces minutes later as Selley opened his try account for the season.

Summer signing Richie Rees made the break and centre Selley, on loan from the Ospreys, provided great support and had enough pace to beat the covering defenders.

Thomas landed another penalty for the Dragons on 30 minutes, but the Blues looked well in control as they took a 6-20 lead into the break.

The home fly-half found himself in the sin bin on 46 minutes for the second match running, although his trip on Williams looked accidental rather than deliberate.

Robinson hit the post from the resulting penalty kick at goal, but the ball fell kindly to the Blues and they eventually created an overlap for Selley to dive over in the right corner. Robinson converted.

The Dragons' best period of the match coincided with a yellow card for Blues lock Paul Tito just before the hour mark.

Thomas came within five yards of the Blues tryline, but his pop-up pass was intercepted by Robinson.

But the Dragons scored the try their pressure deserved moments later when Parks, like all good open-side flankers, was on hand to barge his way over after Martyn Thomas' break.

Thomas converted to bring the Dragons back to within two converted tries at 13-27 down.

Dragons flanker Joe Bearman became the third player to be sent to the sin bin when he was given a yellow card for a spear tackle, and Robinson added a further three points to the Blues total from the resulting penalty.

The result was finally put beyond doubt on 68 minutes when replacement number eight Lewis crossed after Rees darted from the base of a scrum.

Robinson slotted over his third conversion before ending the night's scoring with a drop-goal three minutes from time.

  • Blues coach Dai Young:

  • "We would have settled for that coming down here tonight. It was a great performance.

"We've still got things to work on, but I've got a big smile on my face.

"We held our composure when we got in front, we didn't play silly and I thought we were comptetitive around the park."
