Jones and Hook are competing for the Wales fly-half jersey |
Former Wales captain Phil Bennett has called on national coach Gareth Jenkins to select Stephen Jones at fly-half at the World Cup. Jones this week declared himself fit for the start of Wales' campaign, after a groin injury left his place in doubt.
His return to fitness has opened up the debate over whether Jenkins should pick Jones or James Hook at fly-half.
"You need experience at the World Cup and I would play Stephen Jones at outside-half," said Bennett.
"I think it is a massive boost that he is fit and he must play.
"I believe we have a massive problem at inside centre. I don't think Gareth Thomas is a 12 and we need someone in that position who can look at the bigger picture.

"Maybe James Hook would give us that option. If it was left up to me, I would have Stephen Jones and James Hook in the same side.
"You need experience at the World Cup, someone like (England fly-half) Jonny Wilkinson is a great example of that.
"I would have Stephen Jones at 10 and Hook at 12 because we need that experience in key areas."
Hook, 22, has impressed at fly-half in the two warm-up games he has played for Wales this summer.
Many believe his best position is at 10, but the Ospreys star has shown that he is versatile enough to play at inside centre.
Jones' form in a Wales shirt has been erratic, with the 29-year-old Scarlets man struggling with form and fitness during the Six Nations championship earlier this year.
However, Wales and Ospreys forward Ryan Jones, who misses the 2007 World Cup through injury, insists that Jones must play at 10.
He told BBC Radio Wales' Scrum V programme: "When you have someone of Stephen's calibre, he has to play.
"The World Cup cries out for players of experience in key positions.
"If you reunite Dwayne [Peel] and Stephen all those problems we have encountered will be behind us and they will take us forward.
"Stephen is composed and has a great kicking game and if he is fit to play he must play."
Wales open their World Cup campaign against Canada on 9 September in Nantes.
And Lions back-row Jones feels it is a great game for Stephen Jones to return from injury.
"Canada will be a real test and in a way is a good game for him to come back into," he said.
"If he can play 40 minutes and regain some confidence then that can be a huge boost for Wales."
