Gavin Henson has been warned by Wales coach Gareth Jenkins that his Wales place is under threat from James Hook.

Hook did well as an early replacement for Stephen Jones against Australia at fly-half, then impressed again as an inside centre against Pacific Islands.

With Jones still sidelined, Hook and Henson will start together for Wales on Friday against Canada in Cardiff.

"Gavin will have to add something more to his game because of the competitive nature of James Hook," Jenkins said.

"As much as he's got a lot of talent, Gavin will realise that and recognise that.

"Last week James took a step forward in his ability to bring physicality into a very competitive game.

"He was in the contact area and he was in the tackle area as effectively as I've seen any 12 play for a long time."

Llanelli Scarlets fly-half Jones, the Wales captain, is expected to reclaim the Wales number 10 jersey for next week's clash with New Zealand.

What moves players on? Selection and the pressure of your team-mates

That is likely to leave Henson and his Ospreys team-mate Hook going head-to-head for the inside centre berth.

Henson is desperate to play against the All Blacks, but he believes Jones is the one under most threat from Hook.

"We all realise there is pressure on us. We have the New Zealand game the following week to keep our places for and that is the biggest game of the campaign for us," said Henson.

"If James goes out there and plays a stormer there is no question who the coach is going to select (at fly-half).

"It is as simple as that. James has to take his chance now.

"He is a natural rugby player and that helps in this arena. You can forget about the occasion and go on instinct."

Henson has been playing fly-half for the Ospreys with Hook running at inside centre.

Henson described the role reversal at international level as "weird and strange" but thinks it bodes well for the future.

"It could be the start of a really good partnership," Henson added.

"Inside centre is my favourite position for internationals. I think that is where you get the best out of me."

Jenkins made another 13 changes for Friday's clash with Canada, returning largely to the starting side which drew with Australia.

The only tactical switch was to include Mark Jones on the wing and move Gareth Thomas, who will captain the side in Jones' absence, to full-back in place of Kevin Morgan.

The likes of Sonny Parker and Ceri Sweeney, who both performed particularly well against the Islanders, are rewarded with places on the bench.

"What moves players on? Selection and the pressure of your team-mates," said Jenkins.

"At the present time we have got that and I hope it continues.

"We have genuine selection challenges in the squad and that is a great place to be.

"This is about growing our team, expanding our selection options, making a competitive squad more competitive.

"These are a lot of things that will move us on."
