Sweeney hopes to return in time for the new season |
Wales and Newport Gwent Dragons centre Ceri Sweeney will undergo an operation this week to try to cure the groin problem that wrecked his season. The injury ruled the 26-year-old, 27- cap man out of the Six Nations.
He returned for the Dragons' failed attempt to make the Heineken Cup, but was given the summer off by Wales.
"The doctors were confident that rest and rehab would cure the problem, but it hasn't healed so an operation should sort it once and for all," he said.
"The doctors have predicted a couple of weeks rest before I can do some work.
"If that goes well I should be back in training during the pre-season."
The Dragons and Wales also hope long-term absentees Kevin Morgan (foot) and Gareth Cooper (shoulder) will be fit by then.
