Gareth Jenkins says he insisted on having the final say in the make-up of his backroom coaching staff before agreeing to become the new Wales coach. Jenkins will meet the Welsh Rugby Union next week to choose his assistants, with Llanelli Scarlets coach Nigel Davies expected to be top of his list.
"It was essential that you can create the environment that you need to take this type of challenge," said Jenkins.
"You need a group you believe in around you and I've been given that chance."
It is believed that Jenkins' insistence on appointing his own support staff was one of the main reasons he lost out on the Wales job to predecessor Mike Ruddock two years ago.
As well has taking his long-time Stradey Park assistant Davies, Jenkins could also recruit Scarlets fitness coach Wayne Proctor.
Current defence coach Clive Griffiths, who has worked under the three previous Wales coaches, was one of the four unsuccessful candidates on the WRU's shortlist.
His contract expires this summer, but says he hopes to be part of Jenkins' new coaching set-up.
"I haven't spoken with Gareth for a while and whether I'll be in the mix remains to be seen," Griffiths told BBC Wales Sport.
"I'm sure it will all come to a head over the next few days when everything settles down and Gareth has got time to ring the people he wants.
"If I'm in the mix, all well and good. I'll be proud to continue with Wales.
"My contract is rapidly coming to an end and I'm not sure if it will encompass the Argentina tour or not. I'll just have to wait for the phone call."
