Blow for Ospreys fly-half Jones
Matthew Jones will definitely miss the first half of the season
Matthew Jones will definitely miss the first half of the season
Ospreys fly-half Matthew Jones will be out for more than six months after suffering a serious knee injury.

The 22-year-old, capped once by Wales, tore cruciate ligaments in his left leg at Saturday's Cwmtawe Sevens and will undergo surgery in the next fortnight.

Jones lost the Ospreys number 10 spot to Shaun Connor last season, while the region have since signed James Hook and have the option of a fit Gavin Henson.

"Matthew is desperately disappointed," Ospreys physio Brian Downey said.

"He has torn the anterior cruciate ligament and for an injury of that nature there is usually a six-month rehabilitation from the date of surgery.

"Matthew was attempting a sidestep and his knee just gave way underneath him."

Jones joins David Bishop and Craig Mitchell (knee injuries), Cai Griffiths (shoulder) and Andy Lloyd (ankle) among the Ospreys pre-season casualties

Bishop and Griffiths are expected to resume early in the campaign while Lloyd could be fit for the start of the season.
