The Scarlets have called for Wales recognition for Popham |
Wales number eight Alix Popham has signed a three-year extension on his Llanelli Scarlets contract. The deal takes the 26-year-old - who joined from Leeds last summer - up to the end of the 2009 season.
"It's been a great start here and it's an exciting time ahead, there's a lot of ambition at the club," said Popham.
The Newport man has made a big impression at Stradey Park and is in the Wales squad, althought the Scarlets feel he should be in the national team.
"It staggers me at the present time that Alix isn't having the recognition that I think he deserves," director of rugby Gareth Jenkins told the South Wales Evening Post.
"I think this season Alix's regional form has been absolutely outstanding and I think 10 minutes [as a substitute] against England wasn't an opportunity.
"I hope he gets the just rewards in selection in the future and I have no doubt that he has a big international career ahead of him.
"It is great to have that quality of player available to us until 2009.
"It has been a pleasure working with Alix this season. He has made a fantastic contribution and his form has been outstanding."
