Wales add Horsman to autumn squad
Scarlets full-back Lee Byrne

Worcester prop Chris Horsman has joined Scarlets full-back Lee Byrne as the only uncapped players named in Wales' depleted squad for the autumn series.

Horsman, 27, was added after learning his ban for stamping on a Leeds opponent would end in time for him to face New Zealand on 5 November.

Byrne, 25, is preferred to Blues captain Rhys Williams in the 31-man squad captained by Gareth Thomas.

Four of Wales' summer Lions will miss the four-match series with injury.

They are centres Gavin Henson and Tom Shanklin, prop Gethin Jenkins and back-rower Ryan Jones.

There are also fitness concerns over the first-choice half-back pairing of Stephen Jones and Dwayne Peel, while Dafydd Jones and Hal Luscombe are also unavailable.

Horsman was banned for three weeks by a Rugby Football Union on Tuesday after being found guilty of stamping on a Leeds forward in a Premiership match on 14 October.

The disciplinary panel decided the suspension would take effect from the same day of the match meaning he will be sidelined until 5 November.

Lee is a hugely exciting footballer who has the pace and size to break through opposition defences
Wales coach Mike Ruddock

Saracens prop Ben Broster would have joined the squad if Horsman was unavailable.

Wales coach Mike Ruddock says Byrne's early season form for the Scarlets made him impossible to ignore, but stressed that Williams' omission does not signal the end of his international career.

"Lee Byrne has hit the headlines in recent weeks with a string of outstanding performances for the Scarlets to fully justify his selection," said Ruddock.

"Lee is a hugely exciting footballer who has the pace and size to break through opposition defences.

"He has a fantastic left foot, can play in more than one position and has been given the nod over Rhys Williams because of his rich vein of form.

"The door is not closed on Rhys, nor anyone else who performs well in forthcoming games, and we will add to the squad as and when necessary.

"The same goes for any players who are currently out of contention through injury but who may recover and find form."

Wales face Fiji and South Africa on successive weekends after the All Blacks, before ending their demanding autumn programme against Australia on the last Saturday of November.
