Smith says he needs a complete break from the game |
After being released by Cardiff Blues, ex-Wales scrum-half Richard Smith has decided to travel the world. The 32-year-old, whose only cap came against France in 2000, was deemed surplus to requirements after the Blues signed Mike Phillips from the Scarlets.
"In my mind I've quit rugby for good, but that could change," said Smith, who is heading to New Zealand and Australia for a minimum of three months.
"I've given so much to the game, it's time for me to get something back."
Smith says he had offers for the new season, but feels he needs a complete break.
"I had offers for playing and coaching both in Wales and in Ireland," Smith told the South Wales Echo.
"I may have a change of heart and play at a semi-professional level when I return, but I cannot really see that happening. Meanwhile, Blues and Wales Under-21 three-quarter Matthew Nutthall has been made available to Pontypridd RFC for the coming season.
The talented youngster, who is still contracted to the Blues and available to the region when required, was on the Cardiff RFC rota last season.
"Matthew is an outstanding talent and just needs regular rugby and a shot of renewed confidence to challenge strongly for a place in the Blues regional team," said Pontypridd coach Paul John.
"Having Matthew on board will boost our hopes in the Premiership and will create good competition in the squad for the back three positions."
