Rhys Williams says he is "honoured and delighted" to take over as captain of the Cardiff Blues this season. The 43-times capped utility back takes over from flanker Martyn Williams, who is stepping down after leading the club and then the region since 2002.
"I've been fortunate to have played under some great captains in my career for the Blues and Wales. I've learnt a lot from them," said the new captain.
Blues coach Dai Young said: "He is a great example to any young player."
Wales and Lions flanker Williams said he relinquished the armband in the best interests of the club since he will not play for the Blues until October after going on the Lions tour.
Rhys Williams made his debut for the capital's club side in 1999 and won his first Wales cap a year later.
He is one of the region's most experienced players despite being just 25-years-old.
He added: "I'd like to thank Martyn Williams for his support and congratulations.

"He has been a great captain and I'm sure if I require any advice Martyn will be more than happy to help."
Young gave Williams his first taste of the captain's role last season and chose him to led the side in the crucial Heineken Cup qualifier against Viadana.
"We are fortunate to have many quality players at the Blues, Rhys is one of these and has and shown his leadership skills when he captained the side last year, especially out in Viadana," said Young.
"He thrived on the responsibility of being captain during last season's games and is more than equipped to fill the role."
Meanwhile, the Blues have finalised a friendly at Bristol (26 Aug) and Powergen ties with Saracens (1 Oct) and Wasps (7 Oct).
