Street-wise Canada held Wales to a 15-3 lead at half-time, Mark Taylor and Colin Charvis both scoring tries.

But the part-timers predictably faded afterwards, the tourists scoring seven tries for a record win over Canada.

Jon Thomas crossed for a brace and Ben Broster scored on his first start, but the pick was a 60m effort from 19-year- old debutant wing Chris Czekaj.

Canada could only manage a penalty from full-back Derek Daypuck as Wales' stubborn defence snuffed out the few scoring chances to end their North America tour without conceding a try.

The Canucks, fresh from winning the Super Cup tournament in Japan, were determined not to roll over as the USA had against Wales last week, and boosted their chances by narrowing the threadbare pitch.

Their early challenges were physical and committed in front of a Canadian-record 12,800 crowd for a rugby game, Broster in particular feeling the force of a Jamie Cudmore bone-rattler.

Ceri Sweeney opened the scoring with a penalty for Wales and was involved in the first try, supporting a smart break from Nicky Robinson.

Sweeney fed captain Taylor who cut back to wrong-foot the defence and cross for the converted score.

Canada hit back with Daypuck's penalty, but a well-controlled driving maul from a line-out ended with the impressive Charvis being dropped over the line for his 20th career try for Wales.

With the break approaching opposing locks Robert Sidoli and Luke Tait were sin-binned following a lively punch-up.

But it did not break Wales' stride, and with the wind at their backs in the second half they tore into their hosts.

Two of Wales' new boys combined for the third try, hooker Rhys Thomas going on a bullocking run and feeding prop Broster for the Saracens tight-head to crash over.

The home side were tiring quickly and direct running from the Wales pack opened the way for Jon Thomas to crash through the weakened defence.

Canada attacked into the Wales 22, but turnover ball fell to the Wales backs who countered quickly.

Kevin Morgan and Mike Phillips did well to give Czekaj his first ball in space, and the youngster seared past two covering defenders for a superb score.

Another attack from deep in their own half saw replacement Matthew Watkins find Morgan coming on a great angle for the sixth try.

Ospreys fly-half Matthew Jones was brought on for his first cap as Wales emptied their bench, but the try-scoring flow continued with Jon Thomas crossing for his second.

Watkins freed Rhys Williams for an easy run-in and Popham crossed from short range, Sweeney's conversion giving Wales a record points tally against the Canucks.

The hosts tried one last brave attack, but Wales defended meanly and desperately to keep their line intact.
