Former Wales centre Leigh Davies has decided to take a season break from his professional rugby career. The 28-year-old left the Scarlets last month by mutual consent with the club.
Davies, a powerful inside centre, started his first-class career with Neath and has represented Cardiff, Bristol and the Llanelli club side.
He made his Wales debut against Italy in 1996, going on to win 21 caps, the last also coming against Italy in the 2003 Six Nations.
Davies intends to spend a year in New Zealand, but has no intention of playing rugby in his time Down Under.
His coach at the Scarlets, Nigel Davies, was keen to pay tribute to the centre and former captain. "Leigh has been fantastic for this club and we are sorry to see him go," he told BBC Sport Wales.
"I understand he felt he needed a complete break from rugby. He's been frustrated by injuries which have stopped him having a good run at being a first-team player for us.
"Even so he's played a big part in what we have been about. He was superb off the field and when he got the chance to play he was immense.
"We wish Leigh all the best and have told him that when he comes back we'd be delighted to speak to him if he is ready for the challenge."
