Kevin Morgan will hope to put his injury problems behind him |
Wales full-back Kevin Morgan has joined the Newport Gwent Dragons on a two-year deal after passing a medical. There were fears the 27-year-old might be lost to Welsh rugby following the demise of the Celtic Warriors team.
But Morgan becomes the sixth former Warriors player to make a new home at Rodney Parade.
Wales half-back pair Gareth Cooper and Ceri Sweeney, plus Jon Bryant, Gareth Wyatt and Richard Bryan are the familiar faces awaiting Morgan.
"In Kevin Morgan we have a quality full-back who is capable of coming into the attacking line and is solid in defence," said Dragons chief executive Andy Marinos.
"Kevin is experienced both on the European and international stage and will add to the squad greatly."
Morgan, capped 26 times, is unquestionably the most talented of the current crop of Welsh full-backs, but has undergone a catalogue of injuries in recent seasons. He broke his foot after falling on a plastic cone in training in January, sidelining him until the end of March and missing this season's Six Nations campaign.
Morgan had already had to battle back to fitness to try and make the 2003 World Cup following a horrific knee ligament injury last season.
The competiton for the Dragons No 15 shirt will come from Sione Tuipolotu, the current incumbent, although Springbok Percy Montgomery and Wyatt can also fill the role.
Montgomery will miss the beginning of the domestic season while on international duty with South Africa, but has largely figured at centre and fly-half for the Dragons.
The next task for the Dragons is to recruit a new coach following the departure of Mike Ruddock to the national job, and interviews are expected to begin this week.
