Captaincy threat to Charvis
Wales captain Colin Charvis
Charvis feels he is due compensation for tour sacrifices
Wales skipper Colin Charvis could lose his position and tour place over his cash row with the Welsh Rugby Union.

The player is refusing media duties after being denied compensation by the Union for leaving his Tarbes contract early to prepare for the tour.

Charvis is also being refused additional payments for extra media commitments he performs as captain.

The Wales camp will make no comment before Saturday's Test with Argentina, but a stand-off is developing.

If neither side backs down before Sunday, Lions flanker Charvis could be sent home and stripped of the captaincy.

"It's not the sort of thing we want to be talking about before a Test," said WRU general manager Steve Lewis.

"It's an issue between Colin and his conscience. We have put this issue on the back-burner and will be dealing with it after the game."

Charvis, 31, recently signed for Newcastle Falcons, having left French club Tarbes a month early to meet commitments ahead of Wales' trip to Argentina and South Africa.

Skippering the national side has meant an annual 10,000 bonus for past incumbents of the role.

But following a WRU review, each player in the squad receives 1,000 for meeting media commitments.

That has prompted Charvis to take his stance in the belief that the extra duties that go with the captaincy warrant additional pay.

Charvis has referred the media to Lewis, whose relationship with the players is understood to have deteriorated since the demise of the Celtic Warriors regional side.

"I can confirm that the Wales players are being paid 1,000 over and above their contracts to meet media commitments," said Charvis' agent Peter Underhill.

"That was the deal as told to me by the Wales management."
