Wales coach Mike Ruddock has revealed that Iestyn Harris' decision to quit rugby union and return to league came as no surprise to him or his team. The Cardiff Blues centre asked the Welsh Rugby Union to release him from his contract at the weekend.
"We are not surprised, but we are disappointed by Iestyn's decision," said Ruddock.
"We don't like to lose quality players, particularly someone like Iestyn who has worked hard at his game."
Harris earned 21 caps for Wales after switching codes in 2001 and he had been tipped to challenge for a place on the British Lions tour of New Zealand next year.
However, Harris will now try to re-establish himself on the international rugby league stage once he returns to domestic action, possibly with Bradford Bulls.
"I had a chat with Iestyn a while back and he seemed to indicate he would be trying for a Lions spot," said Ruddock.
"Obviously something convinced him not to. We wish him well - there are no hard feelings and good luck to him."
The Wales coach has already targeted Ospreys' full-back Gavin Henson as a replacement for the departing Harris. "My view is that one door closes and another one opens," said Ruddock.
"I am hoping that Henson can go through that door and open it nice and wide against Argentina on Saturday."
