English Premiership champions Wasps survived a second half comeback to win the inaugural Anglo-Celtic Challenge against Celtic League winners Scarlets. The visitors took a 15-3 lead into the interval after tries from centre pair Peter Richards and Ayoola Erinle.
But scores from Mike Phillips and Aisea Havili gave the Scarlets a two-point lead with less than 10 minutes to go.
Phillips was the sin-binned for offside and Wasps created an overlap for wing Tom Voyce to score the crucial try.
The opening phases gave a glimpse of what was to follow at Stradey Park as slick Wasps interplay and soft Scarlets defence resulted in the opening try with just over a minute on the clock.
Fly-half James Brooks glided through he home defence and slipped a perfectly timed inside pass for Richards to run in under posts unopposed.
Mark van Gisbergen added the simple conversion, but Scarlets fly-half and captain Gareth Bowen slotted over a penalty soon afterwards to cut the deficit. The Wasps backs were already looking sharper than their counterparts, and they combined smartly again to send centre Erinle over for the second try on 12 minutes.
Again it was a slick pass from Brooks that opened the Scarlets defence as Salesi Finau lost him man after being attracted to the fly-half's run.
A Van Gisbergen penalty just before the half-hour mark extended the European champions' lead to 15-3.
Finau almost atoned for his earlier mistake in first half injury time, but the typically solid Wasps defence held him up a metre short and stole the ball.
Scarlets enjoyed better possession after the break, and a better pass from Havili would have sent Finau over.
But the ample home support finally celebrated a try when scrum-half Phillips out-paced the cover defence after pouncing on a loose ball. Bowen's conversion brought the Scarlets to within five points.
The frantic first half pace began to take its toll on the Wasps and the Scarlets sensed an opportunity to capitalise.
Two knock-ons denied the home side further scores, but they took the lead on the hour for the first time when Havili collected Matthew Watkins' pass at pace to burst through.
Bowen converted to put the Scarlets 17-15 ahead and on course for an unlikely victory.
Falling behind stung the Wasps into action, and when Phillips was sin-binned in the last 10 minutes, the visitors' backs combined for the first time in the second half to send Voyce over in the left corner.
