 | It doesn't make good business sense to employ me |
Wales captain Colin Charvis says his continued commitment to international rugby has cost him a regional deal. The 31-year-old flanker is playing for French second-division side Tarbes and has failed in his desire to get a contract in Wales for next season.
"The regions expressed an interest but mainly if I wasn't playing for Wales, it's a double-edged sword," he said.
"Foreign clubs allow you to play for your country as they think it adds to their own prestige."
Charvis added: "I don't take it personally, with the structure of the Celtic League if the regions signed me I would be away with Wales for a lot of the time.
"They are run as businesses and need their best assets on the park.

"The Welsh Rugby Union give the regions funding to subsidise their players, but it just doesn't make good business sense to employ me." Three unnamed French first division sides are interested in Charvis and he looks certain to join one next season.
Although that should allow him to continue playing for Wales, he may miss the summer tour to Argentina and South Africa as the French season runs into June.
"I haven't had time to think of the tour yet and I haven't checked the dates," admitted Charvis.
"The Six Nations is all that's been on my mind and come Sunday I will be thinking of getting back on the plane and continuing my career in France."
Wales' experienced centre Mark Taylor has already suggested he will be seeking talks with incoming national coach Mike Ruddock with a view to being allowed to miss the summer tour.
Ruddock will hope that he does not face a mass exodus ahead of his first major test in the Wales hot seat.
