Martyn Madden has stunned the Scarlets with his resignation |
Wales prop Martyn Madden has dramatically quit Stradey Park after handing in his resignation over the weekend. According to a statement released by the Scarlets, Madden had informed the regional side that he did not wish to play for them again.
The prop apparently refused to travel to Wrexham with the squad for Saturday's Celtic League match against The Borders.
Scarlets chief executive, Stuart Gallacher, said: "I have been disappointed in Martyn's attitude and believe he has let down the coaching staff and our supporters.
"Martyn has been a popular player with the fans and has contributed to our success but there is no room at Stradey Park for anyone who is less than 100% committed."
Madden has won five caps for Wales but has suffered with a shoulder injury this year and missed out on a place in national coach Steve Hansen's final World Cup squad.
Scarlets director of rugby, Gareth Jenkins, said: "We have all worked very hard to help Martyn try to realise his considerable potential.
"But we have a squad here who are all committed to the club and each other, and no one player is bigger than the team effort."
In contrast, the Scarlets have extended the regional contract of Ian Boobyer.
The Llanelli flanker was originally only drafted into the regional side at the beginning of the season to provide cover during the World Cup.
But Boobyer has appeared in every game since and has been an inspiration to the largely young and inexperienced pack.
"When the going gets tough Ian is always one of the first to put his hand up," Jenkins added.
"He is a true professional and we are delighted to extend his spell at Stradey until the end of the season."
