Ravens celebrate championship
Thomas and Samuel
Gareth Thomas and Leighton Samuel celebrate with the trophy
Bridgend owner Leighton Samuel held the league trophy in his arms and then described it as "the most expensive vase I have ever bought."

Jovial celebrations littered the Brewery Field after Bridgend's 22-13 defeat over Neath saw them win the Welsh Premiership for the first time.

It is perhaps appropriate that the trophy should be won by the expensively assembled Ravens side.

With the advent of regional rugby next season, the Welsh league will now revert back to a semi-professional championship.

"It's a fitting send-off. I am delighted that we have won the league, but bitter about what has happened," said Samuel.

"I am sorry that the squad which we have been building is going to have to break up.

"But you have to give the players the credit.

It means so much for everyone associated with the club because it is the first piece of silver wear that we have won in over 20 years
Allan Lewis, Bridgend director of rugby

"There has been so much turmoil over the last three to four months, a lot of the lads failed to get provincial contracts, but they dug in and we've come away with the league.

"I am lost for words really - but I know that it is the most expensive vase I have ever bought."

Samuel's sentiments were shared by director of rugby Allan Lewis.

"It means so much for everyone associated with the club because it is the first piece of silverware that we have won in over 20 years," he said.

"I am really pleased for the players. They have gone through so much recently, they've got a tremendous spirit and deserve it."

Wales international Gareth Thomas was also jubilant after watching his team mates secure the championship.

"It means so much to everyone, I have never experience anything like this," said the club captain.

"I won the league with Cardiff, but the scenes here tonight goes to show how everyone is feeling.

"The fans were out in force tonight. They have been with us all season, so this trophy is for them as well, they deserve it as much as the players."

  • The new Bridgend and Pontypridd rugby region will play in blue, black and white next season.

A name for the new side has yet to be finalised.

Wales scrum-half Gareth Cooper's move from Bath to the new region looks imminent, with the player's contract in the hands of his advisers.
