WELSH PREMIERSHIP Newport (35) 61 Tries: P Montgomery (2), A Cadwallader, O Tonu'u, G Gravell (2), R Snow, M Mostyn. Cons: Montgomery (5), S Raiwalui. Pens: Montgomery (3). Ebbw Vale (6) 9 Att: 5,985 |
South African star Percy Montgomery put disciplinary worries aside to score 29 points and ensure that the Steelmen will finish at the foot of the last Welsh Premiership table. Montgomery faces a possible life ban after pushing over a touch judge in the midweek defeat at Swansea, but he was magnificent for Newport, scoring two tries and kicking five conversions and three penalties.
Vale, who will merge with Newport next season for Celtic and European competition, had scrum-half Gareth Betts sent off after 32 minutes for a dangerous tackle.
The Black and Ambers, making their final home appearance and with many of their stars leaving Rodney Parade at the end of the year, were in no mood for mercy and ran in a total of eight tries.
Raiwalui converted the final try in his final Rodney Parade appearance |
Montgomery fired over two early penalties to set Newport on their way, and they proceeded to run in four first-half tries. Flanker Gareth Gravell got the first from close in, prop Rod Snow charged across for another, scrum-half Ofisa Tonu'u weighed in and winger Alex Cadwallader also crossed.
Vale's response was limited to two penalties by fly-half Byron Hayward, the second taking his total for the season to 520, a Welsh scoring record - although the vast majority came in Pontypool's title-winning Division One campaign.
It was brilliant to get a win like that on my last game at Rodney Parade. Newport captain Simon Raiwalui |
Newport piled on more heavy pressure in the second half. Montgomery struck with two quick-fire tries, Gravell added a second and Matt Mostyn completed the rout in injury time.
To the clear delight of the home crowd, that score was converted by Newport captain Simon Raiwalui, the giant lock making his final home appearance before a summer move to Saracens.
"It was brilliant to get a win like that on my last game at Rodney Parade," said Raiwalui.
"I've had some good time at the club and have no regrets. I would not change anything during my time here.
"I hope there will be success for the two sides that will merge next season, and would love to come back and play here again."
