WELSH PREMIERSHIP Swansea (14) 42 Tries: T Evans, G Evans, A Farley, R Sweeney, G Swales, C Balshen. Cons: Sweeney (6). Newport (26) 33 Tries: O Tonu'u, J Jones-Hughes, S Howarth, B Breeze, R Thomas. Cons: P Montgomery (3), J Strange. Att: 2,000 |
The All Whites final game at the top level of Welsh rugby ended on a controversial note when their win over Newport at St Helen's was stripped from them.
Prop Carwyn Edwards was injured early in the game and when his replacement Tim Evans was sent off for punching in the 55th minute the Whites chose to go with passive scrums, meaning that the game was forfeited.
Soon afterwards Newport had Mike Voyle and Percy Montgomery sent off, and with the extra space created fly-half Rob Sweeney was the hero for the Whites with 17 points to complete a comeback win.
The Black and Ambers have not won at St Helen's for 27 years, but they will get the points from this encounter to move into a strong third position in the league.
Ofisa Tonu'u opened up the scoring with a ninth-minute try, and further scores in the first quarter from Jason Jones-Hughes and Shane Howarth rocked the Whites to their core.
Tim Evans got the home side moving with a 26th-minute score on the start of an eventful night for the prop.
Swansea number eight Gavin Evans got his side's second try, but a score from Black and Ambers wing Ben Breeze on the stroke of half-time took the visitors clear again for a 14-26 interval advantage.
Early in the second half lock Andrew Farley crossed for the Whites' third converted try.
Voyle was red carded for illegal use of the boot |
Tempers boiled as Evans received his red card, but rather than take advantage Newport lost their heads - Mike Voyle went for illegal use of the boot and Springbok international Percy Montgomery followed for pushing an official to the ground, leaving Swansea with the numerical advantage going into the home straight.
Swansea's backs were looking dangerous every time they got the ball, but until the 71st minute Newport's more experienced pack helped them stay ahead.
But then that man Sweeney stepped forward with a try, his sixth in three games for the Whites.
Gareth Swales and Christian Balshen soon followed him over the line, and Sweeney converted all six Swansea tries to add 17 points to the 34 he scored against Llanelli on Saturday.
Rhys Thomas had the final say for Newport with a late try, but the Welsh Rugby Union's laws proved more punishing for the All Whites.
