Llanelli players celebrate after winning the cup |
Scott Quinnell hailed Llanelli's 12th Welsh Cup victory as a "fantastic" and "fitting" result to all associated with the club. The Scarlets beat Newport 32-9 at the Millennium Stadium, and the former Wales captain glowed with joy after the final whistle.
"It is a fantastic result and I am really proud to be taking the cup back to Stradey.
"There was a lot of emotion surrounding the cup and we all know how much it means to win it. I thought that we were outstanding today," said Quinnell.
Llanelli ran in four tries against the Black and Ambers and Quinnell was quick to praise his team mates.
"Mark Jones' two tries were fantastic and the whole back line were excellent."
He added: "It's a fitting tribute to everyone at the club, especially Gareth Jenkins. "He played for the club 30 years ago and now he is leading us into the new regional set-up with a cup victory."
Llanelli were expected to win the final comfortably, but Newport made life difficult for them, and trailed just 10-9 in the final quarter before Llanelli finished with a flourish.
Director of rugby Gareth Jenkins said he was delighted with how his team finished the match.
"I was under no illusion about Newport. I knew they would bring a physical presence, and they did very well, especially in the line-outs and scrums," Jenkins said.
"It was a difficult first 65 minutes, I felt that our substitutions certainly had an impact."
Guy Easterby, Llanelli's Scrum Half reiterated Jenkins sentiments.
"The final score doesn't really show how the game went," explained the Irishman.
"It was tough against Newport and we only managed to pull away in the last 10 minutes."
The Principality Cup is the first and only piece of silverware the Scarlets have managed to win this season and Easterby was delighted to win the cup.
"It's good to finally get a trophy out of the season. We deserved to win something after the way we have played."
