Cardiff too strong for Caerphilly

Cardiff raced in three tries in an eight-minute spell midway through the second half to sink rock-bottom Caerphilly in a lacklustre match at the Arms Park.

Caerphilly, with a gale at their backs, started with the enthusiasm that comes from reaching the final of the Parker Pen Shield and were rewarded with a second-minute try.

Centre Roddy Boobyer ducked inside one tackle, brushed aside acting captain Emyr Lewis and won a kick-and-chase to the line.

Fly-half Justin Thomas, one of five ex-Cardiff players in Caerphilly's starting line-up, found the wind too difficult and was off-target with the conversion and two penalty attempts.

Cardiff finally found some sort of fluency when livewire scrum-half Richard Smith took a tap penalty near his own 22.

The move spread right and wing Nick Walne sped past opposite number Ryan Howells to race in from 40 yards.

Nicky Robinson landed a good conversion and added a simple penalty before the interval.

Thomas finally succeeded with the boot early in the second period, but Cardiff struck back immediately.

Walne, starved of action on the wing, came inside looking for work and took a short pass from Robinson to go under the posts.

Robinson then cut through a tiring defence to send flanker Jim Brownrigg in, while Smith picked up a deserved touchdown wide out.

Robinson converted all three to end the game as a contest.

The man-of-the-match also had the final word, popping up on Walne's shoulder to take a short pass and cross in injury time before converting his own try.
