WELSH PREMIERSHIP Pontypridd (28) 42 Tries: James (2), Nuthall (2), Parks, Lewis. Cons: Jenkins 6 Swansea (7) 14 Tries: Sweeney 2 , Cons: Sweeney 2 Att: 3,500 |
A convincing win for Pontypridd over Swansea at the House of Pain puts them back in contention for a top place in the Welsh Premiership.
Ponty pushed the All Whites aside in a largely one-sided game, with Sardis Road favourite Neil Jenkins stealing the show with a rugby demonstration of the highest order.
Jenkins controlled the game with a display of immaculate passing and precision kicking.
Under his direction, Ponty attacked from the kick-off and in the ninth minute Shaun James broke clear to score the opening try of the match.
Completely dominant, Ponty struck again from a ruck inside the 22. Wales U21 Matthew Nuthall broke free to race under the posts and score.
Jenkins duly converted for the second time of asking.
Swansea did eventually come to life thanks to an individual piece of skill from outside-half Rob Sweeney.
Sweeney drove up field before kicking ahead, re-gathering and running under the posts to score. Sweeny then added the conversion himself.
Despite his solo effort, Swansea failed to spark into life.
Pontypridd made use of a number of powerful driving mauls to send Richard Parkes crashing over, and just before the interval, James added a further touchdown.
Conditions made play in the second half increasingly difficult, and on a wet and greasy surface, both side made frequent errors.
Nuthall added to his account after 50 minutes sprinting under the posts after chasing a diagonal kick to the corner from the boot of Jenkins.
Sweeney got a try back for Swansea, but in the later part of the game Mark Lewis scored for Ponty and secured the victory.
