Cardiff consigned Welsh Premiership champions Bridgend to only their second league defeat of the season on Tuesday night.

The home side scored four tries in the 27-13 win, and secured third place in the league by moving a point clear of old rivals Newport.

Winger Dean Dewdney scored the opening try after 10 minutes and flanker Jim Brownrigg added a second on the half-hour mark after finishing off a move he started.

Nicky Robinson should have extend Cardiff's lead, but the fly-half missed both conversions and a straight forward penalty attempt.

Bridgend's pack had the edge over the home forwards, and were unfortunate not to score when twice being held up over the Cardiff tryline.

Gareth Cull kicked a penalty on 38 minutes to ensure the visitors were on the scoreboard at the break.

An early exchange of penalties in the second half gave both sides three points apiece before Cardiff wing Lee Abdul grabbed the first of his two tries.

Bridgend hit back five minutes later with a Matthew Owen try, but hopes of a comeback were dashed once replacement Chris Davies was given a yellow card for tripping Richard Smith.

From start to finish, we were the better team
Cardiff coach Dai Young
Cardiff put the result beyond doubt 10 minutes from time when Abdul, playing on permit from Aberavon, went over.

The match also marked John Tait's farewell to the Arm's Park faithful.

The Canadian lock, who has spent six years at Cardiff, has signed a two-year deal with French club Brive.

"It's an opportunity to try something new and experience a new culture," Tait told BBC Sport.

"I've really enjoyed my time here, but for the sake of my family and myself I thought it would be nice to restart somewhere else."

Cardiff coach Dai Young said Tait had made a huge contribution to the club.

"He's been part of the furniture at the club and we're all sad to see him going," said Young.

"But realistically, John's at a stage of his career where he's looking to get as much out of it as he can. We can't compete with the offer from Brive."
