Paterson is playing a full part in Edinburgh's pre-season training

Chris Paterson, Scotland's record points-scorer and most-capped player, returns to the national squad for a training camp in St Andrews next week.

The 32-year-old Edinburgh full-back suffered kidney damage when he won his 100th cap against Wales in February.

Toulon's Rory Lamont, who sustained knee ligament damage in the same game, is also included in the 37-man pool.

Jason White will not attend but head coach Andy Robinson insists the former skipper remains in his thoughts.

"I have not invited Jason to the St Andrews camp as I think the priority for him at the moment is to concentrate on his pre-season duties at Clermont Auvergne after the leg injury he suffered last season," explained Robinson.

"I have spoken to Jason and I know how determined he is to be part of our plans this season.

"We will be closely monitoring form over the opening weeks of the season and there will be opportunities for those outside the squad for St Andrews to be considered for the autumn Tests."

Scotland entertain New Zealand, South Africa and Samoa in November.

And the hosts will want to continue the form that saw them end last season with three away Test match victories - against Ireland and a double in Argentina.

"St Andrews is an important camp for us," added Robinson.

"It's about restating our collective values and our commitment to strive for improvement.

"I was pleased with how we ended last season but now our focus has to be on how we start this season, especially our opening game against the All Blacks."

Glasgow number eight Johnnie Beattie has undergone surgery on a troublesome shoulder and will attend the St Andrews camp, despite embarking on a long-term rehabilitation programme.
