MacDonald delight at Scotland start
Scotland have made three changes to their starting line-up for Saturday's third and final autumn Test against Argentina at Murrayfield.
Alan MacDonald wins his first cap at openside flanker and Ben Cairns starts at outside centre, with Alex Grove moving to inside centre.
Thom Evans comes in on the left wing with John Barclay, Simon Danielli and Graeme Morrison dropping out.
Chris Cusiter continues as skipper with co-captain Mike Blair injured.
The Scots are looking for their first autumn clean sweep since 2002 after victories over Fiji and Australia.
Scrum-half Rory Lawson, a late call up for Blair last weekend, played for an hour in the 9-8 triumph over the Wallabies and retains his place on the bench.
Glasgow winger Evans, who made a good impact during the Six Nations, gets a chance to impress head coach Andy Robinson after showing up well, alongside MacDonald, during Scotland A's 38-7 win over Tonga last Friday.
"We do have competition for places and last weekend was about two international victories at Murrayfield against Australia and at Netherdale against Tonga," said Robinson.
Robinson aims to freshen up team
"Australia was a very physical international and that is now history.
"This selection is about the management of our squad and giving players that performed in the A team an opportunity to deliver a win for Scotland.
"Alan MacDonald has been playing well. His continuity skills are very good and he deserves this chance."
Edinburgh's MacDonald gets his chance, with Barclay rested after his exertions against Fiji and Australia.
"I thought it was right to just make a couple of subtle changes and I think that really helped the team moving forward," added Robinson.
"I saw this as an opportunity to give Alan MacDonald a start. One, because he's been playing well for the A team, but also because of how John has performed - he has done well - and the punishment that he has taken.
"In the back line, I just wanted to freshen it up a little bit with a bit of pace.
"Thom Evans brings that; he's the quickest player in the team.
"Ben Cairns has been playing well at 13, potentially would have started (against Fiji) if he'd have been fit.
"He's got his fitness back, played in the A team game and did well.
"Alex (Grove) has been the stand-out performer in the back line and he's really held the back line together with his defence, so we're looking at him playing at 12."
After the huge defensive effort required to keep Australia at bay, Robinson wants to see his players on the front foot against the Pumas, who have lost to England and Wales on this tour.
"We've got to make sure that we enjoy playing with the ball in hand this week, as opposed to giving it straight back to the Argentines."
Scotland team to play Argentina: R Lamont, S Lamont, B Cairns, A Grove, T Evans, P Godman, C Cusiter (captain); Allan Jacobsen, Ross Ford, Moray Low, Nathan Hines, Alastair Kellock, Alasdair Strokosch, A MacDonald, J Beattie. Replacements: D Hall, K Traynor, J White, R Vernon, R Lawson, C Paterson, N De Luca.
