Scotland lock Hines had a knee operation earlier this week

Scotland lock Nathan Hines is in danger of missing the entire Six Nations with a knee injury.

The experienced Perpignan star had been hopeful of a recovery in time to face France on Saturday but was required to undergo surgery on Tuesday.

Team doctor James Robson said: "A small piece of cartilage was removed and Nathan will now undergo rehabilitation.

"That usually takes between three to six weeks and our physiotherapists will monitor him accordingly."

Scotland will get a two-week rest after their trip to Paris, with Italy visiting Murrayfield on 28 February.

Northampton prop Euan Murray, currently sidelined with a rib problem, has a chance of facing the Italians but Dave Callam, Rory Lamont, Matt Mustchin and Ross Rennie are all long-term absentees through injury.

Scotland host Ireland on 14 March and end the campaign against England at Twickenham on 21 March.
