Chris Paterson says a Scotland win against Argentina in Rosario is more important than personal milestones.

The Edinburgh player will equal his country's appearances record with his 87th match for Scotland at the Gigante de Arroyito stadium.

"I want as many caps as possible, but they are just numbers and not important if the team loses." said Paterson.

"I like being part of the team. I don't think about my benefit and the record doesn't disturb me at night."

Scotland coach Frank Hadden believes that after a disappointing Six Nations campaign, good displays against the world rugby's third-best nation are vital.

As well as a much-needed confidence boost, Hadden says the two-test tour against the Pumas is crucial to his own side's world standing.

"We must win the series to go up the rankings, as we can't go into the next World Cup with a seeding of 10th," said Hadden.

"It's very difficult to progress if you don't win these matches.

"You need to be on top to have a good seeding in the World Cup."

The teams meet again for the second test in Buenos Aires on 14 June.
