New Zealand defeat hosts Scotland en route to victory |
New Zealand produced a dominating display at the IRB Edinburgh Sevens to lift the trophy with a 24-14 win over England in the final at Murrayfield. The Kiwis, who had already sealed this year's overall championship, had already ended hopes of a home victory. They defeated Scotland 36-14 in the quarter-finals before thrashing Samoa 14-0 in the semis. The Scots finished up by losing 14-5 to South Africa in the consolation Plate play-off match. However, coach Stephen Gemmell was proud of their display. "I'm very disappointed not to come out with silverware, our performance in the final maybe merited it," he said. "The effort has been magnificent, we have just equalled the best a Scotland sevens team has done." England's Ben Gollings took heart from his side's showing in the finale as they battled back from 19-0 down before the All Blacks turned the screw to claim their sixth series win out of eight this season. But he admitted: "It just wasn't our day, we gave them too much of a head-start." Welsh hopes ended in the last four in a narrow 7-0 reverse to England.
